The Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL) schedules blitzes and initiatives every year with the goal of making workplaces safer for Ontarians. The blitzes and initiatives are scheduled in specific sectors, and are meant to ensure that both the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Act are being followed. As well, blitzes and initiatives enhance employer awareness of their responsibilities, and their role in keeping employees safe on the job.
FYI: Initiatives starting on January 15, 2018!
Focus: Machine Guarding and Electrical Hazards
Start Date: January 15, 2018
Workplaces with a history of non-compliance and repeat violations will be given priority during the blitz period. Inspectors will be looking for appropriate and present machine guards, a developed and enforced lockout program, and other health and safety requirements as outlined under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Act.
While both the schedule and the specific focus of blitzes and initiatives are released ahead of time, workplaces are not notified in advance. During employment standards initiatives, there is a heavier focus on workplaces with a history of employment standard violations. These initiatives also tend to focus more on businesses that tend to employ vulnerable workers (young, temporary, foreign, non-traditional, etc.), and workplaces where the number of employees is rising. However, any workplace may be visited.
