Frequently asked questions
Who needs Standard First Aid Training?
According to Regulation 1101, all workplaces in Ontario covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) must provide first aid training to their employees. Most Ontario workplaces are covered under the WSIA.
Does this training meet WSIB First Aid training requirements?
Yes, as a Red Cross Training Partner, OSG’s first aid training meets the WISB First Aid training requirements.
How long does First Aid certification last?
Your certificate is valid for 3 years, at which point you may take our Recertification course to maintain your certification for another 3 years. You are not able to practice without a valid certification and once expired you need to retake the entire course.
Recertification must be completed with the same provider you were originally certified with.
If you took First Aid with OSG, take our First Aid Recertification course to get certified quickly and easily.
What First Aid training is required for the workplace?
The required First Aid training depends on the number of people working per shift at a workplace:
- Standard First Aid: For workplaces with six or more people working on any shift, at least one must have a standard first aid certificate.
- Emergency First Aid: For workplaces with five or fewer people working on any one shift, at least one must have an emergency first aid certificate.
We recommend Standard First Aid training as it is the most comprehensive First Aid course.
How many First Aiders do I need as employees?
There is no required ratio of trained first aiders to total employees under Regulation 1101. However, you must have at least one person on site at all times who holds a valid first aid certificate.
Things to consider:
- The size and layout of your workplace
- Whether a first aider can reach anyone on site within two minutes
- The nature of the work and associated hazards
- Coverage for vacations, sickness or shift workers
All employees, regardless of employment status, must be given first aid treatment when they need it. OSG’s workplace first aid courses can help you meet your obligations.
Is First Aid training mandatory in Ontario for businesses?
Yes. Workplaces covered by the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act (WSIA) must have at least one employee on-site at all times with a valid first aid certification. The level of certification required depends on your shift size.
- 5 or fewer employees per shift – At least one person on-site must hold a valid Emergency First Aid certificate.
- 6 or more employees per shift – At least one person on-site must hold a valid Standard First Aid certificate.
Standard First Aid covers everything in Emergency First Aid, plus: Spine and head injuries, wound care, joint, muscle, and bone injuries, environmental emergencies, sudden medical emergencies, and poisoning.
How long is the Standard First Aid course?
The Standard First Aid course is completed over 2 days, with approximately 14 hours of in-class instruction. Training combines both theoretical learning and hands-on practical components.
Training can be physically demanding and involves prolonged kneeling, bending, and working on the floor. We recommend comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.
Some course content includes depictions of real-life emergency scenarios, which may be distressing for some participants. Please keep this in mind when preparing for the course.
What should I wear to my First Aid class?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement. First aid training is hands-on — you’ll be kneeling, bending, and working on the floor as part of the practical exercises.
Think athletic wear or casual clothes — anything you’d be comfortable moving around in for the day.
