Our Overhead Crane Course combines expert-led theory with a practical evaluation to verify competency. Phase 1: Theoretical Component

The theory component provides participants with the knowledge to support safe and effective crane operation. Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand applicable legislation and occupational health and safety requirements related to overhead crane and hoist operation
  • Identify different types of cranes and hoists, including key components, safety devices, and industry-standard terminology
  • Perform operator functional checks before and after each shift
  • Apply proper load handling techniques and basic rigging principles
  • Use internationally recognized hand signals for safe communication
  • Complete and maintain operator daily logbooks

Phase 2: Practical Component

To complete Overhead Crane certification, participants must pass a practical evaluation and are expected to complete 8–10 hours of practice on their equipment with a competent operator beforehand.

The practical evaluation measures participants’ skills across key areas, including:

  • Successful completion of the practical skills evaluation at their workplace within 90 days of finishing the overhead crane training course
  • Competency in operating cranes and hoists safely and according to standard procedures
  • Adequate experience on each piece of equipment used for the evaluation
  • Use of equipment that meets annual certification and inspection requirements and is in safe, fully operational condition

The time required varies depending on the delivery format you choose, as some options are longer than others. After completing the theory portion of the overhead crane training, the practical evaluation must be completed within 90 days.

To achieve overhead crane certification, participants must have a minimum of 8 hours of practice on the equipment being evaluated before completing the practical component.

Do I need any prior experience with cranes to take this course?

No prior crane experience is required to complete the theoretical portion of the overhead crane course. However, before completing the practical evaluation, learners must have at least 8 hours of experience on the equipment they will be assessed on.

Is this Overhead Crane course compliant with CSA standards?

Yes. Our overhead crane training aligns with applicable CSA standards, including:

  • CSA B167-96: Safety Standard for Maintenance and Inspection of Overhead Cranes, Gantry Cranes, Monorails, Hoists, and Trolleys
  • C22.2 NO. 33-M1984 (R2014): Construction and Test of Electric Cranes and Hoists
  • C22.1-1994: Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (17th Edition), Safety Standard for Electrical Installations

Is there a practical assessment for Overhead Crane training?

Yes. To receive a certificate of competency, participants must pass the written test and successfully complete a practical skills evaluation.

The practical evaluation is conducted at the participant’s workplace and must be completed within 90 days of finishing the course. Additional charges may apply if multiple devices are evaluated.

Is the practical evaluation included in the price?

No, the practical evaluation is a separate fee and is scheduled after completing the theory portion of the course. It must be completed within 90 days of finishing the course, and additional charges may apply if multiple devices are evaluated.

What is the required passing mark to receive a certificate of completion?

Participants must achieve a minimum score of 80% on the theory component to receive their certificate of completion.

Is this the same as getting an overhead crane operator licence?

How often should operators renew their overhead crane certification?

Many workplaces choose to re-certify every three years or as required by internal policies or insurance providers. OSG can help you determine the best interval for your operation.

What are the technical requirements for Overhead Crane online training?

No extra software is required to join a virtual class. All you need is a web browser to start learning.

For the best experience, participants should use:

  • A laptop or desktop with the Chrome browser (cellphones and tablets are not supported at this time)
  • A stable internet connection with speeds of at least 5 Mbps upload / 2 Mbps download
  • Built-in or external speakers or headphones to hear the facilitator clearly
  • A webcam and microphone, which are recommended for full participation in activities
