Our training focuses on instilling the knowledge and confidence people need to make the right decisions, use their equipment properly, and approach tasks at heights with a clear and proactive mindset. Once completed, you will be issued a Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development CPO-Approved Working at Heights certificate and have both theoretical and practical knowledge to operate safely in high-risk environments.
Theoretical Component
After completing this heights training program, participants will gain an understanding of:
- Identify potential dangers associated with working at heights
- Understand and use the hierarchy of controls
- Identify when ladders are appropriate to use and how to inspect, position, secure, and maintain them
- Identify when warning methods and physical barriers (including guardrails) are required
- Describe the limitations, application, and storage of different fall protection systems
- Select the appropriate fall protection equipment when working on a platform
- Understand the responsibilities of workplace parties with respect to a rescue plan
Practical Component
To pass this course and earn a Working at Heights certificate, participants must demonstrate:
- How to calculate fall distances
- How to inspect equipment
- Don and doff a harness
- Maintain 100% tie-off
Who should take this course?
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act – Ontario Reg. 213/91 Construction Projects, Working at Heights Training is required for anyone who works on a construction project and uses the following methods of fall protection:

What does CPO-Approved mean?
A CPO-Approved course means that a training program has been reviewed and certified by the Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) of Ontario, under the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
This means that the program meets specific standards and requirements designed to provide high-quality, effective training. OSG’s Working at Heights training program is CPO-Approved by the Ministry of Labour.
Who needs Working at Heights training in Ontario?
In Ontario, working at heights training is required for workers who are employed on construction projects and are required to use fall protection systems, such as travel restraint systems, fall restricting systems, fall arrest systems, or safety nets.

How long does Working at Heights training take?
Our course takes 8 hours to complete. Once completed, you will receive your Working at Heights certificate the same day.
Our Working at Heights refresher course takes 4 hours to complete and is available in-person at various locations.
How long is Working at Heights good for?
In Ontario, Working at Heights training is valid for three years from the date of completion. You must complete a refresher training course before the three-year period expires to maintain your certification and continue working safely at heights.
Can you complete Working at Heights training online?
To be compliant with the Ministry of Labour, a working at heights course cannot be completed entirely online. To receive certification, it requires both a theory component and a practical, hands-on component. At OSG, our course has been approved by the Ministry of Labour Immigration Training and Skills Development’s Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) and is a 1-day in-person course.
While some training providers may offer the theory portion online, the practical component must be completed in person to ensure that you can demonstrate understanding and safe use of fall protection equipment.
Is Working at Heights mandatory in Ontario?
Yes, Working at Heights training is mandatory in Ontario for people working on construction projects under the Occupational Health and Safety Act – Ontario Reg. 213/91 and if you use any of the following methods of fall protection:
- Safety net
- Work belt
- Safety belt
- Travel restraint system
- Fall restricting system
- Fall arrest system
How do I check my Working at Heights certificate?
After you have completed the course with OSG you will receive a temporary digital card. In 6-8 weeks you will receive an email from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development with instructions on how to access the Prevention Certification Management System portal where your certificate is located.
Under the OSHA regulation, O. Reg. 297/13, employers are required to maintain a record of your approved Working at Heights training.
I lost my Working at Heights card; how do I replace it?
Please reach out to the MLITSD at 1-877-202-0008, by email at WAH.Inquiryline@Ontario.ca or through the online portal to access your digital training record. OSG does not have a physical or digital copy of your certificate. Make sure to include these details when you contact the MLITSD to inquiry about your Working at Heights ticket:

Do I have to retake heights safety training if I change employers?
No, you do not need to retake Working at Heights training if you change employers. It is transferable because the certificate is issued to you as an individual, not your employer. It is valid for three years from the date you completed it. To show your new employer that you have completed this training you must show a copy of your valid certification.
Is Working at Heights training the same as fall protection training?
No, Working at Heights training and fall protection training are not the same, though they share similarities.
In Ontario, Working at Heights training is a specific, standardized Ministry of Labour approved training mandated for people working on construction projects and uses various fall protection. In Ontario, a Working at Heights Ministry of Labour CPO-approved course is the only valid training for construction projects.
On the other hand, fall protection training is a broader course that is focused on providing training for people who are exposed to fall hazards. It covers basic theory and best practices for fall prevention. OSG provides fall protection training for people who work at heights and use fall protection, but are not designated under the Construction Projects regulations set out by OHSA.
If you work on construction projects and use fall protection devices, you are mandated to take a certified Working at Heights course.
