Phase 1: Theoretical Component
The theory component provides participants with the knowledge to support safe and effective crane operation. Participants will learn how to:
- Understand applicable legislation and occupational health and safety requirements related to overhead crane and hoist operation
- Identify different types of cranes and hoists, including key components, safety devices, and industry-standard terminology
- Perform operator functional checks before and after each shift
- Apply proper load handling techniques and basic rigging principles
- Use internationally recognized hand signals for safe communication
- Complete and maintain operator daily logbooks
Phase 2: Practical Component
To complete Overhead Crane certification, participants must pass a practical evaluation and are expected to complete 8–10 hours of practice on their equipment with a competent operator beforehand.
The practical evaluation measures participants’ skills across key areas, including:
- Successful completion of the practical skills evaluation at their workplace within 90 days of finishing the overhead crane training course
- Competency in operating cranes and hoists safely and according to standard procedures
- Adequate experience on each piece of equipment used for the evaluation
- Use of equipment that meets annual certification and inspection requirements and is in safe, fully operational condition

Is there a practical assessment for Overhead Crane training?
Yes. To receive a certificate of competency, participants must pass the written test and successfully complete a practical skills evaluation.
The practical evaluation is conducted at the participant’s workplace and must be completed within 90 days of finishing the course. Additional charges may apply if multiple devices are evaluated.

What are the technical requirements for Overhead Crane online training?
No extra software is required to join a virtual class. All you need is a web browser to start learning.
For the best experience, participants should use:
- A laptop or desktop with the Chrome browser (cellphones and tablets are not supported at this time)
- A stable internet connection with speeds of at least 5 Mbps upload / 2 Mbps download
- Built-in or external speakers or headphones to hear the facilitator clearly
