Determining Respirator Protection Requirements
With the outbreak of COVID-19, employers should be conducting a risk assessment to determine how to control hazards that the virus may present to their workers. Depending on the risk assessment, employers may decide to make respirators or other PPE mandatory. Employers may also provide respirators or face masks for workers to wear voluntarily.
In determining if you should require or provide respirators to be worn by workers, consider:
- The latest advice from the WHO and Public Health Agency of Canada
- The level and frequency of interaction your workers have with the public or vulnerable or infected people
- Whether other controls are adequate enough to protect workers
Many workplaces are regulated by governing bodies that may have provided guidance on PPE or other protective measures to undertake amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. These types of workplaces should follow the advice or requirements of their governing bodies.
